Programme objective

The overall objective of the transport programme was to provide Norwegian authorities with reliable knowledge on oceanic contaminant pathways of significance for the Barents Sea, and on sources and processes affecting the transport of contaminants in the Barents- and Kara seas.

Phase 2
In phase 2, there was one project with participation from various of the institutions involved in phase 1.  Results from phase 1 and new simulations were used to make recommendations about the design of a marine monitoring programme for POPs and heavy metals:

  1. Where should monitoring in the Barents-Kara Seas take place ?
  2. What types of samples should be collected (compartment and matrix) ?

Phase 2, overview and results

Parallell project on radionuclides:
The Transport and Effects Programme also supported a parallell project about marine monitoring of radionuclides. The report was prepared by JoLynn Carroll at Akvaplan-NIVA in collaboration with Brit Salbu from the Agricultural University of Norway (NLH) and Gordon Christensen from the Institute of Energy Technology (IFE). The final report "Radioactivity monitoring programme for the Northern Seas" (2002) is available from the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA).

Final recommendations on monitoring
The last report from the programme looks across transport and effect and makes recommendations on monitoring of contaminants in the Northern Seas.
